Overview
ivsNewsManager Server was a solution for the production of infochannel-type television programmes, adaptable to many needs: TV news, live sports, elections, video portals and advanced live titling. With the ivsVideoJUKEBOX option it could also broadcast video on demand or interactive games.
It was designed around the real needs of television broadcasters, who collaborated with IVS on the project.
Thanks to the power of the Leitch dpsQuattrus, a single system works as an advanced video server and infochannel: it handles 4 video sources, live or from hard disk (LAN and SAN fully supported), and can scale, rotate and position them through four high-quality 3D hardware DVEs.

Twelve independent graphic layers handle two tickers (two independent crawl rows, each with its own colour, size, font, speed, direction, transparency and shadow), a customizable real-time clock (date, day, year, hh:mm:ss) and nine more graphic layers for additional news, broadcaster and sponsor graphics, decorative elements, logos, etc.
Video quality is the highest available: all graphics and video can be 4:2:2 compressed or uncompressed, with data rates from 8 to 168 Mbps per video or graphic stream.
All playable elements (organised in 13 playlists and 3 panels) are fully dynamic and can be changed during the live broadcast, both remotely from the clients and locally from the main user interface: add, remove and edit items, change the playlist order and trim the IN/OUT points of news, video clips and graphics during playback. Colour, size, shadow, transparency and position of crawls and static text news, as well as crawl speed and direction, can be changed live.
Audio and/or video streams can be swapped manually on the DVEs or AV inputs with the included software switcher. Some presets are bundled with the software, and with the built-in tools (DVEs, graphic layers, etc.) users can easily create their own.
News and playlists can be updated or added locally and remotely, through unlimited clients or by automatic recognition of .xml and .txt files. For interactive TV programmes, ivsNewsManager Server can handle SMS messages sent from mobile phones, not only showing them live but also using them to drive playlists (e.g. video jukebox, live polls). It can be integrated with third-party software to add custom features (ivsNewsManagerSDK).
Features
- 3 audio/video clip playlists, up to 168 Mbps for each video
- 2 crawl playlists
- 1 clock/timer generator
- 5 title/news playlists
- 3 graphics/logo playlists (24- or 32-bit TGA/TIFF files)
- 1 graphic layer, 720x576 32-bit
Clients and collaborative workflow
Unlimited clients can be added, allowing workgroups to collaborate on the same project, sharing news and playlists in real time and in complete security. ivsNewsManager also bundles unlimited licences of ivsNewsEditor, a stand-alone news text editor for collaborative news editing.
- ivsNewsAutoUpdater: imports news from XML or TXT files received via FTP, LAN or internet from news agencies or in-house journalists. News are filtered by category (sports, economics, etc.) and the user defines in which area of the screen each category is shown. Imported news can be edited, added or deleted without affecting the live playback.
- ivsNewsManager Server Automation: schedules all video and graphic playlists to meet the requirements of any broadcast network, also interfacing with an SQL database.
- ivsVideoJUKEBOX: changes or adds audio/video clips in the playlists simply on receipt of SMS messages from viewers, emulating a jukebox.
- ivsSportManager: live sports shows need very quick updates of results and standings. ivsSportManager helps create presets and updates results and standings from .xls or .mdb (Microsoft Excel or Access) files; when results are updated, the database recalculates the standings automatically and all graphics are on-air ready in less than 1/10 of a second.
- ivsSMSManager: displays SMS messages sent from anywhere without retyping, letting the user filter, edit or delete them. SMS can be used for paid televoting, and ivsSMSManager can automatically update the results of the public vote with appropriate text, pictures and video.
Video and audio I/O
- Video inputs: selectable live inputs SDI, DV, YUV component, Y/C and composite (CVBS). More live inputs can be added with additional Quattrus hardware, such as the lower-cost Q2D-5010.
- Video outputs: two independent output channels, simultaneously available as SDI, YUV component, Y/C and CVBS. The two channels can carry Fill and Key, or run two different playouts with their own groups of playlists, possibly sharing the same playlists.
- Video standards: PAL and NTSC (an HD version with full Altitude support was announced).
- Audio I/O: analogue balanced and unbalanced, S/PDIF, AES/EBU and SDI embedded audio. The bundled ivsAudioDelay lets the user adjust the audio delay as needed.
- Audio/video switchers: support for a wide range of Kramer and Leitch switchers.
- Languages: English and Italian; server and clients could be quickly translated into any language, with any font.
Editions and demo version
ivsNewsManager was offered as a turnkey system equipped with Leitch dps Quattrus 4x4 (price depending on configuration and number of inputs/outputs), in lower-cost configurations without server/clients or based on Reality and Quattrus 0x4 hardware, and as software only in two upgradable editions: Standard and Server.
The demo version was a full working version with demo watermarks on the video outputs and without project saving. It required one or more Leitch Quattrus 4x4 (Q3D-5400) boards with their drivers installed, plus a security code and an activation file issued by IVS on the basis of the Quattrus hardware ID. Downloads were subject to the IVS software licence.
